Will this website actually implement federation? Will it make the same Old Twitter mistakes? Well, I'm here to stay tuned at least.
I'm Here to Stay Tuned
When I signed up, I was curious:
Bluesky App (I am calling it this to be specific about which segment of the architecture I mean) didn't have bookmarks at this time; I figured later on it might be a good place to keep posts about the topic, like this one:
I know @safety.bsky.app team is not a big one but it doesn’t look good when you have a huge wave of new users from Turkey because of government enforced censorship on X/Twitter and then you silently add a country specific moderation service and start blocking users.
In the course of answering the first question I learned about leaflet.pub, and just now it struck me this might be a more navigable/legible place to keep these posts, in addition to the original thread, because threading is still somewhat gnarly on Bluesky App. Here are the remaining ones.
This should be viewed as a collection of shiny, low-hanging fruit specific to my interests rather than an attempt at comprehensive coverage of the topic.
After X’s repressive actions, hundreds of thousands in Turkey joined Bluesky, seeking a freer space. Reports of government censorship here are deeply troubling. Don’t squander this trust. This is a critical moment for principled leadership—not silent compromise. @jay.bsky.team
As opposed to endlessly debating decentralization, we secured funding from @skyseed.fund, brought Utkarsh on board, and took major steps toward Blacksky’s complete independence from Bluesky PBC—while staying interoperable with the rest of the network.
The internet was meant to be free - your identity shouldn’t be locked behind a login screen. Introducing bsky.storage 🐔🤝🦋 Now you can back up your Bluesky data hourly + recover your account if Bluesky ever goes dark. Simple, free, & fully in your control. Learn more: medium.com/@storacha/in...
The 2nd phase of Blacksky's @skyseed.fund grant has been completed 🥳 - We built the first "Mod Relay" 📡 - Every moderation action ever made from over 600 moderation services ( @moderation.bsky.app, @blacksky.app , etc.) is available at wss://atproto.africa/xrpc/com.atproto.label.subscribeLabels
reminder that bsky.team only has jurisdiction over what happens on their servers. If you self-host or are hosted by blacksky.app they cannot remove your posts. they can hide it on bsky.app but it will still be up elsewhere. signups and migrations are open.
if it felt like a lot was happening on the network yesterday: yes microcosm indie firehoses didn't blink ✅ EU relay ✅ EU jetstream ✅ CA relay ✅ CA jetstream ✅ us-east jetstream ✅ spacedust
The function of the waffles joke is an in-group signifier. Singal, Graber, and Oppiliappan are showing in-group solidarity; they're all in on a joke. The joke is they have institutional power, and you don't, and they feel contempt for you, that you still want to have opinions about how power's used.
TL; DR In the next 5 business days you should be able to go to Link's page on blacksky.community and see his posts and he'll be able to post but people using the bsky mobile apps won't see it. After that we'll get Blacksky-only posts up. After that we can talk about purging bsky mod tools fin/11
It's here! PDS MOOver now supports automated backups and restores that anyone can use! This also includes adversarial account migrations! pdsmoover.com
alright debug.hose.cam now also checks each of Bluesky's regional moderation services, and hints at the practical severity of different labels.
Here's one for the books: @skeetsapp.com now officially supports Blacksky's AppView @rude1.blacksky.team. So if you're looking for a native, accessible iOS / iPadOS / MacOS app to work with Blacksky - we got you covered.
Bluesky runs an appview. Blacksky runs an appview. A complete appview is a several terabytes sized database of the >18 billion follows, likes and posts of all bsky users, ever and forever. To run a different appview is to make a fork in bsky’s timeline. One has new posts from Łink. One doesn’t.
We run a full AppView + PDS + Relay for ~$1,772/mo. PDS is cheap (~$0.03/user/mo, 4 vCPUs, 32GB RAM). AppView is the expensive part; indexes the entire network (16TB DB), not just your users. Storage scales linearly with network activity. PDS scales linearly with your account count.
Blacksky is excited to announce Acorn, a platform for growing and managing communities on decentralized infrastructure. blackskyweb.xyz/introducing-...
